Nisiotissa Beach

Nisiotissa Beach

Just outside N. Pyrgos is a beautiful natural beach called Nisiotissa. A few meters from the shore is a small island (rocky islet) with some ruins on its top. These are the ruins of a church built during the Frankish period and the ruins of a tower built during the Ottoman period.

In fact, a tomb from the medieval period has been found that seems to be related to an important historical event, according to a text by the Byzantine Great Ecclesiarch Silvestro, who arrived in Oreoi after the Ferrara-Florence Council where he had taken part in (1438-1439).
History tells us that when Constantinople was so seriously threatened that its very existence was in doubt by the Ottomans, the people of Byzantium were looking for allies. This situation brought Emperor John Palaiologos to the brink of “buying help” by uniting two churches. For this reason, a council was held in Ferrara and Florence.
